     Heiwa-do Karate

The style of Karate developed by Soke (Founder) Kiyohisa Hirano
is the result of over 50 years of training, research, and study.  The
Heiwa style is a synthesis of the best parts of the four major styles
of Japanese Karate-do, with additional influences from Soke Hirano's
experience in Aikido, Iaido, Judo, and Ki.

Soke Hirano began his Karate training in Wado-ryu which was
strongly influenced by the principles of Jujitsu (the Japanese art of
grappling and throwing).  Heiwa-do's basic philosophy and strategies
         of defense come from Wado-ryu.

The basic techniques of Heiwa-do are similar to the Shotokan system
of Karate.  Noted for its scientific approach to body physics, force, speed, and motion, Shotokan's
pedagogical teachings make grasping the finer points of instruction, easier for the student.

Known for its emphasis upon efficiency, many of Shito-ryu's superior stances are adopted by
Heiwa-do, and in fact Shito-ryu also influenced the development of both Wado-ryu and Shotokan.

Likewise, Goju-ryu's unique, dynamic breathing has been integrated into Heiwa-do through breathing
exercises, and as a methodology for developing power and focus among novice students.

The name "Heiwa" was first suggested by
Sensei Michael Shimabukuro, a student of Soke Hirano.
It takes the first kanji character of the name Hirano, ("Hira" or "Hei"), and the first character from
Soke Hirano's first style of Karate, Wado-ryu ("Wa").  The "Do" in Heiwa-do is the Japanese kanji
character meaning "the way", "path", or "road".  The naming was meant to pay respect to Heiwa-do's
origins out of Wado-ryu, but is serendipitous, because "Heiwa" is the Japanese word for "peace", and
thus "Heiwa-do" literally means "The Way of Peace".
