     The History Of JIKC

Soke (Founder) Kiyohisa Hirano's first Karate Dojo in Hawaii
opened on July 1, 1962, under the name All-Japan Karate-do
Federation Wado Kai, Hawaii Branch.  The school continued under
this name until Soke Hirano re-named it as the Japan International
Karate Center in 1965, in order to reflect a more open and accepting
attitude towards all styles of Karate-do.

By 1970, JIKC had expanded to operate a number of Karate Dojo
across the island of Oahu, and on the neighbor islands of Hawaii as
well.  It was during the 1970s that JIKC went on to open Dojo
locations on the US mainland, and back in Japan.  Many of these
Dojo are still in operation today, including JIKC's locations in
Yokohama, the mainland states of Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.

JIKC continued to thrive throughout the 1980s, until Soke Hirano suffered a severe heart attack one
day in 1988.  This event dramatically redirected Soke Hirano's life toward the study of Eastern
Medicine and the health benefits of Karare training.  It was at this time that Ki Exercises became a
         part of the JIKC curruculum.

During the 1990s JIKC began to produce many talented athletes interested in pursuing National-level
competition.  These competitors exposed JIKC to forums such as the USA National Championships,
and the Junior World Championships, and earned the organization national and international recognition
with their impressive performances and competitive records.

Today, all of JIKC's licensed schools, such as the Japan Karate Institute, the Japan International Karate
Federation, and the Hawaii Karate Association, to name just a few, are operated by Soke Hirano's best
students, and continue to forge a path of leadership and excellence within the global Karate community.
